 | SOS Ondoy - Appeal for help | Sep 28, 2009 |
This is a site set up to help coordinate donations from friends from the UK to typhoon victims in Manila.
Manila and other nearby provinces are currently in the state of calamity. On the 26 September, typhoon Ondoy (known internationally as Ketsana) devastated the capital and caused severe flash floods when it poured a month’s worth of rain in just 6 hours! 80% of the city was submerged at one point – with some areas 2 storeys deep under water. It’s the worst flooding we’ve seen in over 40 years. We are ill prepared, many with no insurance. The high population density in the capital also meant that far too many people were affected – with loss of homes, belongings, livelihood and lives - and the goverment simply will not be able to stretch its resources to respond adequately to this crisis. Millions now have no electricity, access to potable water and are in dire need of dry clothing, food and shelter.
It tough times but I know that we can do something together to help, even in our own little ways. Now more than ever, rescue and relief efforts are crucial. And we can all pitch in and help in different ways. I hope you can join us -- scroll down for more info. Any support is welcome.
